Please enjoy my logorrhea as I scream into the void.
Wish it was all science and movies and dogs but we can't ignore what's happening now.
I'm not the first to say it but it doesn't get said enough. Our forefathers fucked up. Somehow even after the madness of King George they never expected bad actors like those that exist today. I'm still oddly enough rooting for the system but it was almost like it was designed to be undermined.

The House is gerrymandered to the right's advantage. The Senate vastly overamplifies red state representation. The filibuster makes it so they can do whatever they want fiscally once a year via reconciliation, but democrats can never make real change because 60 votes is too much.

Every branch of our system is now anti-democratic, anti-majoritarian, and entrenched. The electoral college screws the executive branch (see, Gore and Clinton). Most SC justices were appointed by GOP presidents who didn't win the popular vote.

The presidential system presumes good faith that the right has simply abandoned at this point. It's no longer responsive enough to hold anyone accountable.

There's a reason most modern democracies are parliamentary. Votes of no confidence at least have the potential to turn things on a dime.

Would just like to add that Six Feet Under was in there as well.

That early 2000s HBO run was unrivaled. Even the lesser known shows like Carnivale and Rome were fantastic. Sunday nights were always a treat.

I'll just say Kenji Lopez-Alt has done stuff for ATK, Cook's Illustrated, Serious Eats, and NYT, in addition to producing his own excellent stuff.

The Food Lab remains an excellent compendium, and what he does on youtube at home is a good starting point for any recipe.

I miss the cereal reviews Jamelle did for Serious Eats.

I'm sure the oil wealth will trickle down to the people of Venezuela like conservative assholes always promise.

They're deeply unserious people clearly mugging for the camera and trying to look tough with their arms crossed. The others above are actual statesmen overlooking a monumental operation.

I'd be surprised if Trump's photo even happened in real time instead of being staged after the fact.

Think it was Al Franken back in the day who pointed out conservatives tend to view their country like children do their parents. Idealized, incorruptible.

The adults realize those ideals are to be strived for, and only sometimes achieved.

As an authoritarian Trump identifies himself with the state. L'etat c'est moi. This should be perfect for him.
January 2, 2026 at 10:01 PM
It's crazy how scalable this stuff could be. He's a mayor going for it and the state and federal implications are immense.

Trump should've been flat out disqualified for office after Jan 6th. That the right can only argue the autopen should nullify Biden's actions are ridiculous on their face.

Dumb, yes. With an obvious dose of white privilege.

It's a stale exercise at this point, but imagine if masked Somalis demanded to enter a daycare in such a way.

I can't think of any greater indictment of our country than that those notions are now just built into the equation.

Coffee would like to have a word.

(Of course your underlying point remains absurdly true for many reasons.)

Also a quick shout out to Men in Tights. Might be a minor work, but watched it with my kid a bit ago and never heard him laugh out loud more.

Was never a Jaws guy so for sure on Raiders.

Brooks is harder. Blazing Saddles is great but for pure entertainment I'd watch Spaceballs.

Took my son to a 40th screening of BTTF and can't disagree with that for Zemeckis.

Ashamed to say I've never seen French Connection. Seems I have homework.

I saw Reservoir Dogs on VHS and Pulp Fiction the day after it came out and can't express how formative they were for me, even if QT has since fallen into some (admittedly great) pastiche.

Still, those directors all have massive oeuvres and I can't begrudge any of those choices. What are yours?
December 29, 2025 at 5:52 PM
I was really excited for Stewart's return. On his first day back he goes off about how the choices suck, they're both old, and Biden is no better than Trump. As if they were remotely equivalent. Haven't watched him since.

But still has me wondering - Why was he so on point during the Bush years?

I'm white and have never felt the need to apologize for it. Want to know why? Cause I'm not a dick and treat others different from me with respect and decency by default.

JD Vance and an unfortunately huge chunk of MAGA do not. They'll look for any opportunity to excuse their xenophobia.

The hackistocracy is in full effect.
December 21, 2025 at 10:25 PM
I don't know why Hillbilly Elegy doesn't get brought up more. He was a completely different person 10 yrs ago when he at least somewhat tried to hold his own people to account.

Now it's just straight up white nationalism, belying the fickle and grifting nature of himself and MAGA.
December 21, 2025 at 7:37 PM
Sure you know this, but Trump. Is. A. Concept. An amorphous ideology of 4 unmentioned letters in the husk of a president. The red hat is just a signifier. Even he acknowledges it by talking in the third person.

The complete detachment of his persona from any accountability is why we're here.
