ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL (2022) is a delight, about how school CAN be a haven for bookish kids trying to understand a cruel world, but only if you work to keep the bullies out. It’s funny, well-shot, and full of bangers. More children should be revolting.

LEGALLY BLONDE (2001) kind of nails law school, except for the presence of Reese Witherspoon. But the rest of it: the status anxiety, the positioning, the stress, the drab clothing, yeah. That was all real. I feel seen. Or attacked. One of those. #SchoolMovie

KUNG FU PANDA (2008) follows panda and kung-fu fanboy Po as he joins Master Shifu’s dojo and learns a style of kung fu that will save the Valley of Peace and defeat the ambitious Tai Fung. Yes- a dojo is a school. Shut up. And it has a good message about the love of learning. #SchoolMovie

Post a movie you like with a terrible rotten tomatoes score

THE HISTORY BOYS (2006) follows a group of grammar-school (high school) boys as they prepare for their Oxbridge (Oxford & Cambridge) scholarship interviews. They have to cope with lecherous teachers, results-driven headmasters, and a whole lot of pressure. It’s incisive and funny. #SchoolMovie

HEATHERS (1989), about a teenaged murder spree disguised as a suicide epidemic, is my daughter’s favorite movie. Its very dark sense of humor masks an earnest wish that we all just get along. The jokes hold up really well, because it was always concerned with punching up, not down. #SchoolMovie

HARRY POTTER & THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE (2001) was a generation’s introduction to fantasy and boarding school. While aspects have aged poorly, the sense of wonder, aided by great actors and Williams’s score, kept kids entranced for a reason. (The anti-fascist message is still good, too.) #SchoolMovie

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2004) follows a the fortunes of a small-town Texas high school football team after their star quarterback is injured. Though eventually overshadowed by its TV spinoff, the film is still good, anchored by great performances by Billy Bob Thornton and Connie Britton. #SchoolMovie

FLATLINERS (1990) follows a group of Chicago medical students as they induce brain death and then revive themselves, bringing back some haunting guilt with them. It’s undeniably goofy, but I have special affection for it because it was filmed on the U of C campus. #SchoolMovie

Amy Heckerling’s FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (1982), scripted by prodigy Cameron Crowe from his book, is the high-school movie of a generation before mine. But it still rings true, from fast-food jobs to the messiness of teen lust. The older I get, the more I love Mr. Hand’s revenge. #SchoolMovie

ELECTION (1999) sets out to illustrate how all of politics is high school writ large, and it does so with sharply-drawn characters. Witherspoon’s Tracy Flick is the standout, but Broderick’s bitter teacher, Klein’s amiable jock, and Campbell’s nihilistic lesbian are all great, too. #SchoolMovie

DONNIE DARKO (2001) involves a surrealist take on high school life. It’s got six-foot-tall evil rabbits, high-school politics of Cold War intensity, and zealous commitment to the dance act Sparkle Motion. Next to these, the prophesied end of the world is just one more hassle #SchoolMovie

DO REVENGE (2023) follows a pair of high-school girls out for revenge on the posh prep-school kids who have wronged them. It offers a pair of unhinged performances from its leads, a couple of solid twists, and a message that, no matter how righteous you think you are, you’re somebody’s bad guy too.

The problem with any DIARY OF A WIMPY KID movie is that Greg is kind of a jerk. The 2021 version manages to soften that a little by animating Jeff Kinney’s illustrations, which play up Hreg’s self-image as an underdog a bit while fitting the cartoonishness of his problems better. #SchoolMovie

THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) was THE high school movie for a generation. A John Hughes script, Brat Pack actors, and Saturday detention made for an iconic combination. “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Aimple amines didn’t hurt either. #SchoolMovie

BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (1989) follows two dudes who use a time machine to pass their final history project. One homophobic slur aside, this holds up really well. It’s low-key, funny, and surprisingly sweetwith a great message: Be excellent to each other. #SchoolMovie

BETTER OFF DEAD (1985) offers up an absurdist take on the tribulations of the school year, from getting over getting dumped to being the only one who doesn’t get math. It holds up really well: the stupider the jokes, the better they’ve aged. My kids laughed hard at it. #SchoolMovie

BATTLE ROYALE (2000) is a Japanese action movie in which 40 middle-schoolers are pitted against each other in a battle to the death. In just two hours, you come to know—and care about—pretty much every kid; a hell of a feat when the only character development comes from the combat. #SchoolMovie

It’s September, so switching to school movies, starting with BACK TO SCHOOL (1986), the Rodney Dangerfield vehicle about a millionaire who goes to college to reconnect with his son. Dangerfield is fine; he’s backed by a young RDJ and Sam Kinison as a Vietnamese-scarred history teacher. #SchoolMovie

THE NAKED GUN (released August 1, 2025) could have been a lazy, cash-in legasequel. But it’s not lazy. The jokes are rapid-fire. Some (the brief OJ nod) are knowing. Some (the snowman sequence) are inspired. All are gleefully stupid. My kids and I laughed hard. #AugustMovie

UNFORGIVEN (released August 7, 1992) could be seen as a risk when it came out: a Western with an aging star, no real good guys, and a downbeat ending. But it’s rightly considered a classic, thanks to amazing performances, a great script, and no-nonsense direction from Eastwood. #AugustMovie

TROPIC THUNDER (released August 13, 2008) is a very funny send-up of egotistical directors, actors who don’t quite get it, and megalomaniacal producers. It skates right up to the line of offensiveness (Downey Jr lives there), but always pulls back because it knows why the line exists. #AugustMovie
