First day in the office this year. Lots of reasons to love working where I do, but the spotlit gold dinosaur in the front garden is a welcome addition to the list 😀

In October, I attended COP16, from which I have just about recovered. Here is a poem not about the magnitude of the challenge, the pressure or the discussions or the wonder of Latin America, but about being a bit crap at packing.
Things I failed to pack for my trip to Colombia On my journey to COP16, I realised I’d not thought to pack: A separate bag for my liquids (a relief that security deemed my unbagged bottle of hand sanitizer benign, and not a sign of evil intent) Nail scissors (making a hangnail inevitable before the week is out*) Up-to-date night meds for the flight, so I used the wrong statin (after very much the wrong dinner) Bread to eat on the flight (hence the wrong dinner) Tissues (condemning me - and anyone within range - to a week of pick’n’flick**) Print-out of the email confirming I had filled in the required immigration form during the right time window (annoying, as I was so proud to have done so***) Notes * It appeared on Friday ** Also condemning me, because no nail scissors, to a sore nostril *** No-one asked for it, which was somehow as annoying as being refused entry would have been. I ADMINISTERED UNNECESSARILY FEEL MY WRATH!

Global Assessment's estimate of a million threatened species against Toby "Dunning-Kruger" Young; and this somewhat simplified classification of all the world's birds.
A decision tree representing a spoof classification of birds, in which there are only three main types (penguins, ducks and birds) and two species of each type. It is intended as a (joke) corrective to the fact that global knowledge of biodiversity is massively skewed towards birds, which I have never found particularly interesting compared to lots of other groups that have received less taxonomic attention.
