Another one of those things. Only those who have never experienced poverty of access to knowledge or entertainment paint it as desirable. As a ten year old I had access to a library bus once a week. That was it. No, it was not a utopia.

until recently around here some very expensive real estate relied on volunteers for fire defence and I don’t think this is good

this whole discussion is very reminiscent of people who argued the internet would fail because there was no guarantee that capacity would be available when it was needed. That only top down provision would work. The rewards are more than sufficient to motivate people to develop solutions.
