Generative AI is good at producing content tagging outputs that "look" right ... but do they meet user goals? And are they any better than what we can already accomplish with less problematic approaches? Here's an experiment that explores those questions.
AI Supported Auto-Categorization
A comparison of manual, NLP, and LLM-based tagging methods and key takeaways for effective tagging approaches.

Too often, well-intentioned taxonomy solutions never fully make it to the systems they're meant to serve. Don't let this be your fate! Here's the process I use to migrate taxonomy drafts in a spreadsheet to the taxonomy management tool in @sanity.io.

Instructions, templates, and scripts for migrating a taxonomy from a spreadsheet into the Taxonomy Manager tool on Sanity CMS.

Taxonomies should be designed with clearly defined goals and use cases, right? Obvious as this is, it's a step many orgs gloss over—with frustratingly mixed outcomes as a result. Here's a process I use for selecting terms, creating structure, and vetting design approaches for taxonomy projects.
Purpose-Driven Taxonomy Design
A purpose-driven process for selecting terms, creating structure, and vetting design approaches on small and large scale taxonomy projects.

Under the hype and hyperbole of "AI" capabilities, I suspect there's a compelling use case for LLMs in making time-tested analysis and classification practices more approachable. Here's an experiment combining LLMs and rules-based text analysis exploring that idea.
AI Supported Taxonomy Term Generation
An example workflow for coordinating LLMs and text analytics to generate topic tags for an article collection

Status: Trying to imagine what my reaction would have been if someone had told me in 1995 that in thirty years I’d hear NIN’s “Closer” in my neighborhood healthy pet food store on a Sunday afternoon. Times we live in!

Hey BlueSky folk! Occasionally after conferences that tickle my brain I write up a synthesis of all the ponderables that stuck with me. Here's one such synthesis of late November's Taxonomy Boot Camp in DC.
Taxonomy Boot Camp 2024 Themes & Takeaways
Two weeks ago it was again my pleasure and privilege to attend Taxonomy Boot Camp (TBC) in Washington, DC. This was TBC's 20th year, and, in the four times I've attended since 2016, was the strongest ...
