As others have noted here and elsewhere, conservatives have managed to exert astounding influence over the Republican Party without boycotting elections or rooting for Democrats to win out of spite or frustration. They have won huge policy victories for themselves as a result. /2

One lesson to draw from Dr. King’s life, then, is this: Advocate for things you believe in. Don’t let opponents define your message, your goals, or your demands. Let your beliefs guide your actions. Someday, those actions will be all that is left of you. Make them count. /3

To leaders, activists and politicians, when you decide the path you will tread, remember Dr. King’s example. Your opponents will attack you, however much you moderate your positions. They will call you a radical even if you moderate your positions to appease them. /2
