I am a legend at returning home from a holiday. Just look at this. FIVE loads of washing cleaned in one day. What a hero.

Running the IOS26 beta on my iPad and reflecting on how the tablet and desktop look and feel are now very similar. Is it time to predict the end of the laptop form factor?

There’s ordinary perfection, and then there’s Kylie. Thank you, Kylie, for visiting Sheffield (the UK’s undisputed capital of cool) during the Tension tour. You were fantastic.

This time of year is good for not very good runners to remember they almost sort of like it.

You’re not supposed to have favorite parkruns - just like you’re not supposed to have favorite kids. But if it were allowed, this one might just be the one.

The first rule of mild club is, if you see a mild you buy the mild
The second rule of mild club is, if you see a mild YOU BUY the mild
If someone says stop or goes limp, the mild should not have been 5.3%
One mild at a time
No halves, no thirds
If this is your first time at mild club, you drink.

The thought process started with, do we have a nice chianti to go with this lasagne I’ve made. The thought process continued via, “does an orange Ricard sour work as a concept?” Anyway, yes it does.

I laughed at this Mastodon post, and then searched online to discover what the actual front page was for the Star yesterday….. this is the genuine front page.

Hmm, something tells me I put too much whisky in the whisky sauce?

The second big meal of my weekend trip was at Dishoom, a super duper fave of mine. We like cooking from their recipe book so I feel close to many of the dishes but the highlight was this brand new biryani pie on the specials which we must try to replicate!

Last night we enjoyed an incredible Burns night supper in London, with paired Bruichladdich whisky for each course. I’d love to be able to replicate Martin Sweeney’s whisky sauce which made the haggis very special. Excellent venue, Brasserie Max at the Covent Garden Hotel, event convened by Amex.

Nice day off. Ran at Rother Valley parkrun, and found this (pictured) little spot of calm near the start line which I’d not seen on any of my nine prior trips to the course. Spent an hour reading Nights Out At Home. Kids been good. Now going to eat noodles and then go to the pub.

Massaman curry tonight using the same recipe as a few weeks ago. Sadly, the result was chewy and not tender. The beef had been previously frozen, so I wonder if this was the reason. I couldn’t get fresh lemongrass this morning so soaked some dried stalks, but their flavour just didn’t come through.

Further experiments to try to perfect the Yorkshire Pudding, serving as both food and as the vessel. The structure still isn’t solid enough. The experiment continues.

I actually managed to read some books this year, and their covers are in the attached image. Fave: Rory Stewart’s memoirs.

New Year’s resolution 2025 #1: use up all the drawers full of jars of pastes and sauces that I’ve bought …. Which contain pastes and sauces I insist to make from scratch every time anyway.

The centrepiece for Maya’s third birthday was some glorious smoked pulled pork shoulder (aka Boston Butt) supplied by Dean’s in Sheffield. Full sized and bone in so it cooked perfectly. Spiced with a rub of Achiote paste and cider vinegar and smoked for fourteen hours. Look at the smoke ring!

@taiwanomaly.bsky.social Thanks for the follow. I had an amazing and excellent trip to Taipei about 18 months ago. The “Beer To Go” cafe won me over.
