"Do Aliens Speak Physics," my 6th(!) book is out in November and you can pre-order it now. Written w/ @danielwhiteson.bsky.social, it's all about aliens, math, physics, and how much of the world around us is really the world around us. It's also got a lotta silly cartoons! www.alienspeakphysics.com

Going through old photo archives and stumbled across this gem from baby times feat. @mixtapecomics.bsky.social and @avi.silversprocket.net when we used to all table together. Probably from 2014?

Secret editor stories: The imagery in the picture of Assad atop a bloody throne is from Yazan's piece with Omar Khouri. Omar is a big Akira fan (and any classic 80s manga and anime) and based the panel off the chilling image of Akira triumphant on his throne amidst the ruins.

Here's a flip through. It's a really beautiful book! One of the cool things about Yazan is that he's a writer, so he works with many different cartoonists from the region. This makes "Lebanon is Burning" a really nice and varied collection of modern Arab cartoonists as well.

New book that speaks to the present moment in the Middle East even as it is unfolding: my friend Yazan al-Saadi’s “Lebanon is Burning” just came out. Collects comic journalism from the last decade about Syria, Lebanon, Yemen & Palestine. I edited many of these pieces when they appeared & blurbed it

Hello Los Angeles! I will be slinging comics down your way this weekend, December 14-15, from 10am to 5pm, at Comic Arts LA. It is a great show–come on by and see me at table 33B!

Lina and I are also friends from long ago in Lebanon! Here is a drawing I made of her for my book, Spring Rain, where she invited me to be a judge for the Kahil award in Beirut in 2017. Also a picture of the two of us in front of a poster from the exhibition of that show. Lina is simply great.

"An Education in Fear" is a memoir comic, and it weaves together Lina's childhood in Hafez al-Assad's father's Syria with the experiences of her friends who grew up in the Syria of his son, Bashar. The ending is chilling.

This series of webcomics is from my (currently-out-of-print-but-not-for-too-much-longer) first book, Brief Histories of Everyday Objects. These haven't been posted online before, and I've reworked their writing, layouts and art for the web.

Here's an offcut that didn't make it into the web version!

MY NEW BOOK COMES OUT TOMORROW AND IT IS CALLED SPICES AND SPUDS! Lithub, Kirkus and School Library Journal all think it's cool! Maybe you will too? My book is about plants, it is not about politics. Give yourself a little break and read about tulips.

The School Library Journal liked my new book, Spices and Spuds! It's about plants!! Publication day is November 5th, a day when nothing else of consequence is happening in the United States of America.

Tomorrow I’ll be in conversation with Barrack Zailaa Rima about her beautiful new book, Beirut. Friday 10/25 7-9pm at Silver Sprocket, 1018 Valencia St. Rima’s comics are dreamy, haunting and gorgeously rendered. We go way back to Samandal and Irene days. Please come if you’re in the Bay Area!

I have a new book coming out next month called SPICES AND SPUDS and you can buy it RIGHT NOW! Good for curious kids, plant-loving adults and anybody who likes silly little recurring jokes. Kirkus called it “informative and eye-opening,” “fascinating” and “digestible.” Go digest my book!

There’s a public drawing night in NYC tomorrow with my longtime co-conspirators and friends Omar Khouri and Shay Mirk. It’s put on by Cartoonists for Palestine, which I volunteer for.

I won’t be there! But if you are in NYC you can meet folks, do low key drawing, and learn about the C4P print book.

I just got back from a residency in Hawai’i, where I was drawing a lot of abandoned factories, volcanoes and maps for a book. I really like to draw maps. And now I'll stop clogging up your feeds and go back to lurking.

I’ve freelanced short comics journalism for over 12 yrs, like a remora on the dumb shark of New Media as it blundered around the ocean, forgot to keep swimming, and drowned. I love the community that grew around this kind of work. It’s more than the terrible websites that sometimes paid us.
July 8, 2023 at 6:48 PM
I’ve made 4 books–Brief Histories of Everyday Objects (making boring things funny), This Land Is My Land (histories of utopian efforts, w Sofie Dam), Spring Rain (memoir of 2005 fall of Lebanon’s gvmt), and Pests and Pets (about domestication and commensalism bc I love both cats and cockroaches).
