There's an animated explainer of this book online and it's a fantastic resource:

Criminal Code is also good (about latam). The Mechanism is ok also. But those are loosely based on reality so maybe it's cheating.

Usually original writing builds on common-held symbols, stories, metaphors, characters, but then takes them in new directions, situations, contexts. If chat gpt is maximizing for the "most likely" next word in a sentence, it's also maximizing a bit for the "least original" next word in a sentence.

So AI is bad at writing comedy because it looks for the "most likely" ending of a sentence which is also usually going to be the "most expected/least funny" ending of a sentence. I think maybe that can also explain partially why it's not great at original writing.

The other day I asked Chat GPT why it was so bad at writing comedy. It answered that because the model is trained to find the "most likely" next word in a string of text. In contrast, comedy writing usually builds up in one direction, and then takes an unexpected turn to provide surprise/laughs.

Since that's what AI currently seems to be the best at.

So much writing in the real world is about jumping through hoops. I've recently been on a job search, and it is amazing how much time you can lose on cover letters, statements of purpose and other nonsense. I really hope the existence of AI can reduce the existence of bullshit-writing requirements.

That also explains why they wanted to remove access to 4o (4o is more expensive on inference for them is my guess).
August 12, 2025 at 9:42 AM
Yeah, as far as I can tell it helps them reduce cost by taking model selection out of the user's hands and having gpt 5 itself "decide" how much compute to spend on answering a Q. That and changes to the API pricing are the biggest factors IMO. Seems more of a product update than capacity update.

Gross haha. So clearly the increase of sushi consumption in the US has led to the decline in democratization.

But yeah, modernization never could explain chile and argentina in the 60s-70s. So idk why anyone would dig it up now haha

Over the years I have become so much less trusting of democratic indexes also. That flat line for China misses a lot. Civil society/property rights today are different than they were under Mao.

Drinking ice-cold water or tea also helps. Dehumidifiers also help a lot because humidity makes the heat worse.

Eat and drink is the cup, the foot with the ball is sports, and watching tv is her shoulder?
