@andyhermannfl.bsky.social here's an interesting idea for a rule change: if a ball is tipped behind the line of scrimmage, it's a live ball. I feel like most of the rule changes have benefited the offense for the sake of making the game more high scoring. This increases the excitement on defense.

And one other caveat: the number only gets re-entered when it's a "special" draft pick or trade. First round and above or a true headline free agency splash.

Let's say 50 years from when they last played. For the Packers, that frees up 1, 3, 5, 14, 15, and 66. Only numbers out of circulation are 4, 12, 92. Out of circulation for 50 years makes it a truly "once in a generation" player.

Retire the number for 50 years, bring it back while honoring with name in the hall of fame at the beginning AND do a "reentry" ceremony reminding the fan base of the greatness of the player. Win-win.
