200 years ago today, November 4, 1825:

Governor DeWitt Clinton's flotilla completed a 10-day voyage from Buffalo to New York City in celebration of the opening of the Erie Canal. Clinton performed a symbolic "Wedding of the Waters" by pouring a keg of Lake Erie water into the Atlantic Ocean.

New York Governor DeWitt Clinton’s flotilla celebrating the opening of the 363-mile-long Erie Canal arrived at the canal's eastern terminus in Albany en route to New York City. They had departed Buffalo, the canal's western terminus, one week earlier.

New York Governor DeWitt Clinton’s flotilla celebrating the opening of the Erie Canal traversed what is now Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site. The Mohawk Valley site has a half-mile portion of the original canal prism with guard and lift-lock remains.

New York Governor DeWitt Clinton celebrated the opening of the Erie Canal by leading a flotilla on an inaugural voyage from Buffalo to New York City. On the first day, his boat, the Seneca Chief, went by the communities of Tonawanda, Pendleton, and Lockport.
