This strikes me as performative recovery of national heritage. Adding virtue by saying they have not sold anything adds nothing to the ethical horour show that is personal hoarding of national heritage.

source: p36 of this document. In 2023 (the latest figures available), fewer than 4k people in Eng + Wales reported finds to the PAS (p5). If there's 50k detectorists in this country (almost certainly a lot more), under 10% of them report their finds to the PAS #archaeology

It was the breakfast show at 07.50. My colleague Heather was great. Explained reporting of finds, Treasure definitions etc, really clearly. She's a star - but I suspect they showed the package without the studio interview throughout the day! The overall tone of the piece was, 'isn't this brilliant'

The studio interview had an FLO in the studio with two women detectorists.

I would imagine the need for farmers to diversify to maintain income has played a role. My experience of more intensive farming practices, aa a FLO, has been it reduces access to land a little. Direct drilling of seed means less ploughing, and two crops a year, so less fallow time for access.

..with a lot of rally organisers perhaps making a tax free living from a finite resource. What is to be done?
