I code for fun & profit, more the latter now I’m a father. Interested in anything but intolerance (but I’m not big on sports). Kind or not, at least be civil. All views my own. I occasionally blog about coding: http://www.andy-pearce.com/
I studied Computer Science from 96-99, and to be fair many of the lecturers still didn’t use slides. Some of them drew on a blackboard, if you count that.

Steps 1-4 are basically my process for doing anything, small or large. I remember an early Red Dwarf episode where Rimmer spends so many weeks coming up with a revision timetable, he only had a day to actually do all the revision – as a school child at the time, that really spoke to me.

They seem to feel that they can weasel around breaking their pledge by arguing that it’s very selective – but public opinion doesn’t work like that, the nuance is lost. In my view, that the cabinet don’t seem to understand this is one reason they’ve squandered their public goodwill for little gain.

The number of people I’ve seen driving around with a windscreen covered in thick frost, except a tiny little porthole that they’ve scraped away – it’s just insane how anyone feels that’s acceptable.

What somehow some people seem to miss is that it’s entirely possible to not feel personal guilt over historical actions over which you had no influence; but still also accept that they did happen, and they may have created imbalances of opportunity which might need compensatory actions today.

Nastiness alone impresses a certain set of Tory weirdos. They think themselves terribly clever, because that’s what they were told at the expensive school to which Daddy sent them. When they see their own nastiness reflected in another, confirmation bias makes them see the other as intelligent too.

Yet.

Wait until they start selling bulbs with embedded AI.

Canada is clearly well among the world’s safer countries, there’s nothing wrong with pride in that! I’m just saying that the perception of safety among US citizens is a weak indicator of real safety. Quite a few US residents seem to think that London is a Muslim city state awash with knife crime!
November 7, 2025 at 8:34 AM
For context, the BHTP results aren’t just from stats, but heavily influenced by the perception is safety among specifically US travellers. Canada’s intentional homicide rate is 2.27 – much better than 5.76 in the US, but the UK is 1.15.

And the UK’s borrowing is already getting unsustainable anyway, as illustrated by UK bond yields being the highest in the G7.

Wales currently receives £14bn more than it raises in taxes, so the part I’m not sure about are the ways which are proposed to address that. If you’re aware of any articles discussing that, I’d be interested to read them. It’s a topic I know that I don’t know enough about to hold a reliable opinion.
November 6, 2025 at 2:44 PM
Quite possibly! I’m just a bit less familiar with the economics of it. Scotland was covered fairly closely because it actually got to the point of a referendum, so there was a lot of coverage in the press at the time. I don’t think I’ve seen any objective articles assessing the same for Wales.

I’m English and even I think the best thing for Scotland would be to gain independence and join the EU. Not sure if Wales would be quite as able to stand on its own feet economically as Scotland, but I think England needs to become a true international pariah before the idiots here will understand.

I think even in our technological age, being surrounded with water significantly influences people’s perceptions, giving a false sense of invulnerability from the realities of life. Add to that the legacy of empire, and you have a culture where xenophobia can sadly thrive well, unless checked.

The government is largely incapable of preventing companies evading the existing taxes, which are based solely n much more transparent data than this would be. That they’ve even suggested in public really concerns me about the yawning gulf between MPs and reality.

Satire would never plumb these depths. I can only assume this Rocker bellend is intentionally exaggerating for shock value, but it’s so absurd it’s not even shocking. It’s just weird. As in, “don’t engage, just ignore him and hope he gets off at the next stop” weird.

Its invention is, in and of itself, neither a good nor bad thing, it’s simply a fact of history. But the fact that disabling sprays are illegal to carry in the UK (and I’m sure many other countries, but I can’t speak for them) is strong evidence society disapproves.

It indicates that gun manufacturers were selling non-lethal sprays. If you really want all the dots joined, it’s not hard to find sources. Mace was developed with women in mind, and promptly bought by Smith & Wesson.
