I don't really fully buy their password-vs-PIN logic here, at least not for passwords protecting a local account. But I think the technical answer is that the PIN is TPM-encrypted/tied into Windows Hello and they want to use Windows Hello for authentication for a bunch of other stuff

the Mario wiki says it’s because they were both loudmouths, which, ok?? Seems like the names were the job of one 80s guy who just got to have fun with it without a lot of oversight, which makes it kind of funny that modern Nintendo has stuck with them
