The way things are going I wager that Tarrio and his buddies are increasingly likely to get shot at one of these shindigs. It's abundantly clear that the police aren't going to do much of anything about their shenanigans.

Gonna have to disagree with you on the SCUBA thing- since the 70s the industry has had sort of a gentleman's agreement about who can do what that isn't simply a function of money. This was done to avoid lawsuits and any legislation regulating the sport. To this day there are very few.

Given that we seem to be in a time where open hostility is on the rise it's an important consideration. For me, the calculus is simple: I feel that anyone who attempts to inflict harm on myself or anyone I love for hate's sake alone automatically makes the attacker's life less worthy.

There will always be those who are hostle to difference- xenophobia is embedded in the human genome, I think. But at the end of the day I think it's wise to spend time and energy thinking about the likely threats to one's physical safety and taking reasonable steps to ameliorate them.

I think it's fairly simple: the duty of a librarian is to collect and disseminate information. The more one studies, the less intolerant one tends to be. The sharing part of the job requires intellectual generosity. But we *have* met one librarian who we avoided like the plague: Mrs. Lundgard :-)

My bet: warehouse farming is gonna take off, forced by necessity- from both labor shortages and an increasingly unpredictable climate. It's already being done. This will further marginalize independent farmers in favor of Big Ag.
