Robert Dawkins with the progressive group Action NC said he spent about $6,000 opposing the tax. Dawkins campaigned heavily in the Black community. He assembled a coalition of religious leaders and politicians such as former Mayor Jennifer Roberts who opposed the plan, mostly on the basis that the sales tax was regressive and would hurt low-income residents. The city of Charlotte said the average household would pay $240 a year.

WUNC NORTH CAROLINA PUBLIC RADIO ت..٠ Legislative leaders have not supported the legal action against USDA, and Senate leader Phil Berger took to social media to criticize Jackson for filing the lawsuit. He advocated for pending legislation that would prevent the attorney general from suing the federal government over the president's actions. WUNC asked spokespeople for Berger and House Speaker Destin Hall if they're considering allocating any state funding to maintain SNAP, and Berger responded with an emailed statement calling for congressional Democrats to end the shutdown. "The quickest way to end all the impacts of the shutdown would be for the recalcitrant Democrats to stop holding the country hostage," Berger said. "Instead of wasting taxpayer dollars on partisan lawsuits, Jeff Jackson should be calling on his fellow Democrats, including Chuck Schumer, to end the shutdown."

Staff members at ICE's training academy in Brunswick, Georgia, recently discovered one recruit had previously been charged with strong-arm robbery and battery stemming from a domestic violence incident, the current DHS official said. They've also found as recently as this month that some recruits going through the six-week training course hadn't submitted fingerprints for background checks, as ICE's hiring process requires, the current and former DHS officials said. Fewer than 10 of the new recruits were dismissed because ICE training leaders learned from them during the training program that they had pending criminal charges or failed their drug tests or were otherwise considered safety concerns, the officials said.

My one caveat in this story here is that you should not just be taking DHS’s word that these people had criminal histories. You shouldn't take the feds at their word in normal times, but you especially shouldn't do it now considering how much these people just straight up lie.
