#nufc match report from this day 1881, or Stanley FC as were known then

143years on…sometimes I wish they’d stuck to cricket!🤣
November 26, 2024 at 6:22 AM
OTD 1881 - 11 teenage cricketers played their 1st game of Association Football in South Byker

We are United…
But we were Stanley FC..
We merged with Rosewood Juniors & Cheviot FC (maybe not West End)..
We were Born in 1881 - not 1892🖤🤍

5-0! Cine Film found from post-match 👇

Happy Birthday #nufc

On This Day 1881, Stanley FC held their first pre-match press conference at Thomas Allan’s shop, Shields Road

Rules, formation & teams agreed, whilst fielding journalists questions about a ‘bromance-ometer’ between Coulson & Allan

#NUFC was born- 1st match programme👇

Great news for Len’s family - at last! #nufc

Remembered by worflags last season🖤🤍

I may have got my info wrong about the nufc hall of fame later- it may just be 2 tonight🙄

Despite his achievements, Len White was never given a testimonial by the club (back when they were financially crucial to a retired player)

Rather one was organised at Whitley Bay’s Hillheads ground by fans👏
November 19, 2024 at 8:24 AM
Signed for Altrincham ‘66 (7 in 7) & Sligo Rovers 67/68 (6 apps)

Then played locally into his 50’s in Huddersfield for David Brown Tractors (of Aston Martin DB fame), Ossett Town (alongside Jimmy Kerray!) & Elland United.

HT cuppa below with some bloke who could play a bit too😉

Len White scored arguably the greatest ever goal at Edgeley Park v Barnsley - 35yd volley top corner.

Also put Stockport County 1-0 up at Anfield in the cup with a header - his mates celebrated around him as he lay concussed in the box.

Inducted in Stockport County Hall of Fame in 2006!! 👏
November 18, 2024 at 6:11 AM
Heavy snow on The Pennines almost prevented Len from signing for Stockport. He abandoned his trip but, determined to sign him, their manager came to Len instead by train!

Len top scored for The Hatters (10 in 22 -despite only signing in Jan’65, followed by 15 in 36).

Len White - post-NUFC..

He was adored everywhere

39 goals in 110apps for Huddersfield Town between Feb 1962 and Jan 1965.

He helped keep htafc safe from relegation in the 2nd division during his time there and is fondly remembered.

Transferred to Stockport County for £4000 in Jan ‘65.

Len White
Total 153 goals in 270apps

Last goal for nufc v Sunderland

Enough for HofF?

Suffered a few serious injuries - notably by Dave Mackay 1961 in last seconds of a game (after scoring 28 in 33games).
Struggled to regain form & was sold to Huddersfield Town in part-exchange for Jimmy Kerray

Len White Scored the “goal of a lifetime” v Man City 1958. Solo dribble from 15-yards inside his own half, beat 4 players & slammed the ball past the Trautmann. Reporter Ken McKenzie suggested it was “one which Jackie Milburn & Hughie Gallacher would have envied.”

Scored 25 in 32 games 57/58
November 17, 2024 at 5:50 AM
Made the 1955 FA Cup final team only when Reg Davies came down with laryngitis. Provided 2 assists - although wasn’t happy with his corner for Wor Jackie’s goal!!

5’7” but thanks to a great leap scored many headers

On verge of England call-up but injury & nerves got the better of him.

Len White - Does he deserve a place in the #nufc Hall of Fame Tues night?

Signed for nufc Feb 1953 & worked down the pit at Burradon Colliery (until turning professional in March 1956)

Managed to break into the team consistently in 54/55 season, often played wide to supply Milburn & co.

Newcastle switched their attention to Len White - Rotherham reluctantly let him go.
November 16, 2024 at 9:40 AM
Rotherham played and beat Newcastle (then cup holders) in the FA Cup at St James Park.

Newcastle tried to sign Jack Grainger and a few others but were rebuffed.
November 16, 2024 at 9:40 AM
6 goals in his first 6 games for Rotherham.

Scored a ‘worldy’ - the first of a few goals for various clubs which their supporters argue was the best goal they’ve ever seen!
November 16, 2024 at 9:40 AM
Married Joyce in the morning, played Barnsley in the afternoon, winning 1-0.

Selected in 1952 for the FA xi v RAF at Stamford Bridge and v Army at Elland Road alongside teammate Jack Grainger.

OTD in 1881…a cricket team from South Byker held their end of season do🍻

The next11 days were crucial to our history- they chose a winter sport, founded Stanley FC(thus NUFC was born)

An archeological dig(in my imagination)has unearthed the long-lost minutes from that mtg👇
