20 years later, remembering the Evansville
tornado outbreak that killed 24 people, most in the Eastbrook mobile home park. 60 miles from my hometown it was the event (w/Katrina) that cemented my understanding of how the built environment shapes vulnerability.

The FRI anticipates that the annual losses from 5 types of hazards will double by 2050 for most Gulf States. In Louisiana, for instance, the annual costs of disasters is expected to increase from $2 billion to $4 billion due to climate warming.

The Gulf Coast's future with disasters will be more challenging because of climate change. When we look at FEMA's Future Risk Index and measure the share of state population living in the top 10% of the most at-risk counties nationally, we see all Gulf States in the top 10:

When we think of disasters in the Gulf we often think of places like New Orleans and Houston...but the data shows how per-capita damages are often worst in smaller places like Refugio County, Texas ($92k damage per capita from 2005-2024) or Harrison County, Mississippi ($65k).

Disasters have cumulative impacts that are often greater than the sum of the individual events. In the Gulf States, EVERY county has had at least 3 federally declared disasters since Hurricane Katrina, and some have had upwards of 20.

This is one of the most intriguing maps from our Katrina+20 feature, highlighting the counties where the highest levels of social vulnerability and disaster damage intersect. This band of counties are not the places in the headlines, and not where the majority of funding flows.

The Grand Canyon Lodge was destroyed by wildfires on 7/14. It was completed in 1928 and destroyed by fire in 1932, and rebuilt in 1937. Designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, it was one of the last remaining rustic hotel developments in the NPS. It was placed on the National Register in 1982.

Another way to visualize the data from our blog post on state fiscal capacity and potential increased disaster costs...certain states jump out as potentially highly impacted w/relatively low fiscal capacity (LA, KY, NC, etc.)
