Apparently it's easier than acknowledging that Australia has a toxic home-grown culture of white supremacy that creates these people in the first place, regardless of where they come from.

One of the really fascinating things about the Vita Pauli is that the faun etc are presented simply as exotic peoples in the manner of late antique geographers, who were mistakenly worshipped, rather than ever having been supernatural or monsters per se. The hippocentaur seems more symbolic though.

They are indeed squidgy. Walruses would be very unlikely geographically speaking, but the twin curving lines coming out of the mouths is very strange. Yes, probably squidgy dolphins but now I've found a paper on monk seals in antiquity which will keep me entertained.
