This highlights an information problem - districts think the 4DSW will help them, and so they adopt the calendar. Leaders may then over-attribute regular changes in the labor market to be benefits from the 4DSW.
So what's our recommendation for rural schools? I think this participant said it best:

When we look at districts in MO, however, we see essentially no evidence that 4DSWs have a significant impact on teacher recruitment or retention. The point estimates are so small, in fact, that if taken at face value, would correspond to (on average) < 1 teacher retained per district per year.

We conduct a series of semi-structured interviews to better understand districts' motivations for adopting the 4DSW. Consistent with much of the media coverage surrounding this topic, staying competitive in the teacher labor market was a major driver of adoption.

From small positives in AR to nulls in CO and negative impacts in OR, the 4DSW doesn't seem to help recruit and retain teachers. This is especially surprising given the rapid growth in 4DSWs recently.
In Missouri, where this study takes place, growth in 4DSWs has been rapid since the pandemic

Jack contemplates what it means to live a good life and how to estimate teacher value-add in co-teaching environments.
He'd appreciate guidance on either.

Friday afternoon, I'll also share some of my ongoing work with the PRiME center looking @ an exogenous change in charter school funding in Missouri.
Ending the day focused on teacher recruitment. I've had an early peak at these papers and have to say I'm impressed by they - come join me to see why!

Also looking forward to these flash talks on Friday AM which cover a *huge* range of topics.
I'll be sharing some of my recent work in the 10:00am session looking at temporal dynamics in educator labor markets. Very excited to share these results (and some neat data) and get some feedback!

Thursday afternoon I'll be at this session focused on teacher working conditions (with new work from @gzamarro.bsky.social and @jbmcgee.bsky.social) followed by a panel looking at school finance, which seems esp. interesting given the current landscape and changes in enrollment recently

Heading to @aefpweb.bsky.social this week? So am I! Here are a few of the sessions that I'm particularly excited about, and you might be too.
Starting out strong on Thursday with two great (and complementary) sessions focusing on teacher licensure & supply.

Last year was a big year for me. I hear there's some merit in reflection and sharing successes, so here's a thread highlighting some, and thanking those who enabled those successes.
An especially big thanks to my co-authors and committee members @gzamarro.bsky.social and @jbmcgee.bsky.social.

@ajainsworth.bsky.social and Emily Morton (CALDER/AIR) will present their findings from Oregon and Colorado.
Kate Barnes will also have never before seen results looking at teacher burnout and 4DSW calendars.

So, has it worked? Has the calendar helped to better retain teachers?
Come find out tomorrow at #APPAM2024 - 3:30pm. I'll be presenting my work on Arkansas, including some new results.
But it's not just me - there's a lot of other great research in this panel
