Hellbenders are highly reliant on specific environmental conditions, which is one reason they are seeing population declines (habitat loss and degradation). I would NOT recommend them as pets for multiple reasons. Also a state listed species in numerous states, every individual counts!

There is no official answer, but one common theory is due to their appearance they are a creature that crawled from hell, and is hell bent on returning! Check out this cool article from Zoo Atlanta!
