We disaggregate the global results into country clusters by income. Median results show the richest 20% of countries (home to 15% of people) are responsible for over 40% of ecological overshoot in 2017, while the poorest 40% (home to 42% of people) experience more than 60% of global deprivation. 3/

We analyse 35 global indicators from 2000-2022. Median results show slow progress in ending human deprivation, which must *speed up fivefold* to meet global goals by 2030, while rapid ecological damage must *reverse at nearly twice the current pace* to safeguard a stable planet by mid-century. 2/

🧐 Are you wondering where to study and learn post-growth approaches in Europe?

Feeling grateful to have made time to see @fernadovalladares.bsky.social communicate, with empathy and wit, the deeply alarming social-ecological crises driven by our growth-based economies, and what to do about them. Gracias 🙏

They also find emissions in the bottom 99% of US households declined by ~20% since 1990s while the top 0.1% increased by a staggering 50%, ffs.
These household emissions are consumption-based measures that account for trade. Highly recommended study (sadly behind a paywall). doi.org/10.1016/j.ec...

You need to see shocking extent of carbon inequality around the world.
A remarkable study led by Jared Starr finds that super-rich US households emit *2000 TIMES* more CO2e than average low-income country households.
How the f*ck is that even possible? The disparity never ceases to enrage me.

A while ago I realised that a baby girl born in Spain in 2016 can expect to live 85 years, which is beyond the time horizon of most climate scenarios (that range from 'not looking good, but maybe manageable for most' to 'chaotic hothouse hell-planet'). Also, that baby girl is my daughter.

The top 5 over-emitting countries would be liable to pay more than two thirds of total compensation. And the top 5 low-emitting countries would be entitled to receive more than half. This is compensation for mitigating far more rapidly that would otherwise be required, not grants or loans. 6/

We use carbon prices from IPCC scenarios to put a monetary value on excess emissions, and distribute these funds to low-emitting countries as compensation, based on how much of their fair shares would be appropriated by over-emitting countries. The receipts total more than $6 trillion per year. 5/

We find that ambitious mitigation to reach net zero by 2050 in all countries could limit warming to 1.5°C - which is crucial - but the global North would overshoot its collective fair share of the 1.5°C carbon budget by 3 times, appropriating half of the global South’s fair share in the process. 4/

If you see the atmosphere as a commons - a natural wealth for everyone to access equitably and sustainably - then it's not hard to see how deeply unjust the #COP29 $300bn per year goal from industrialised countries is, when historical responsibilities for excess emissions are taken into account. 1/

This chart crushes me. There are more than five times as many billionaires as there were in 2000, and the average net worth per billionaire has nearly tripled, from $1.9bn to a staggering $5.1bn. They're fleecing us, undermining democracy, and burning the world - TAX THE RICH.

Just starting a ~2,500 km train journey from Cadiz, Spain to London for a Doughnut Economics Action Lab
