My initial thought is that WATCHMEN comes close (though the movie is far below masterpiece level in my estimation). The book is obviously an unimpeachable part of western canon and I liked the show (which has become WILDLY more prescient than it already was).

Almost done my rewatch of STAND ALONE COMPLEX S1. It feels downright glutinous that Masamune Shirow's GHOST IN THE SHELL is a masterpiece across three forms of media (manga, movie, show). Is there anything else that pulls off such a trifecta?

I'm really just scratching the surface, too. Like here's Heixing, a guy who is introduced to you as the ENVOY from the FORTRESS OF SUFFERING and he dresses in a long white fur coat with no shirt and shoots two pistols at the same time.

And yes, you better believe that the Power of Friendship is important here. But it's not kitschy. Shonen tropes aboud, but it deals with matters frankly and I would compare the story to more of the seinen genre.

I'll have to pull some gameplay clips but I enjoy the art-style, as well. Cutscenes unfold in vignettes and I find them to be much less grating than when western studios use anime aesthetic haphazardly.

I love Irene, a would-be superhero and martial artist who is convinced to join the crew so that you don't have to arrest her for illegal vigilantism. Her devotion to heroism is such that if given the option, she gives you NO options with how to proceed certain missions.

All of the characters are handling deep trauma and a desire to fix themselves or their world, or burn it to the ground in recompense.
But as serious as the subject matter can be, it's also deeply funny. This is a ridiculous world with a fantastical edge.
