Social liberal, software engineer. #UBI #LVT. May also post about defence and armed conflict. He/him.
For a moment there I thought this was a throwback to the Living Marxism -> Spiked lot.

But no, that was the Revolutionary Communist *Party*.

Could maybe take the line that taxes should have been raised already and it was irresponsible to pledge not to raise them.

But it would be a tough sell.

Mentioned in Player of Games.

It's called getting drone slapped.

It may not seem like punishment, but it ruins your social life. You'll never be invited to parties any more.

I think he's comparing himself to Nelson Mandela.

Also worth noting that almost every developed nation incumbent globally lost vote share in 2024, which is unprecedented.

It's the inflation.

We’re going to hear lots of stories about which people, policies and rhetoric are to blame for the Democrats’ defeat.

Some of those stories may even be true!

But an underrated factor is that 2024 was an absolutely horrendous year for incumbents around the world 👇

Laws only count if humans are willing to enforce them.

See e.g. Trump impeaching Congressionally approved funds.

This also applies to firearms, or even alarms.

Alarms are legal.

Also keys and pens can easily be repurposed.

But self defence begins with avoiding dangerous situations, then extricating from or calming a dangerous situation.

Violence can only be a last resort, both because violence is bad but also it can escalate.

The point I thought I was making was that UK and US practice differs. This may have been less clear than I intended.

I do prefer the British practice (although I also use double quotes). Preference is partly familiarity, and I'm British.

Consistency is more important either way.

By contrast, this is the Oxford (internal) style guide:

As far as I'm aware UK publishers will put following punctuation outside the quotes unless it is a part of the quote.

I do not consider saving whitespace a valid argument when most papers are read in digital form.

Seems related to the motivation behind GiveDirectly.

Which gives aid in the form of cash directly to the individuals most in need.

I thought this was the difference between UK and US style guides.

US will put trailing punctuation within a quote, UK without.

And if the punctuation is a part of the surrounding sentence then clearly without is objectively correct.

Counterpoint is that councils set tax levels, with bands as multipliers, so London councils could start with a lower tax level.
November 1, 2025 at 10:29 AM
Does this amount to a tax on Londoners?

Homes in London are more expensive across the board. Their occupants aren't necessarily richer because they live in these homes, they may have not choice but to spend a higher share of their income on housing. This would leave them less able to pay extra tax.
