Hopefully unlike the Sewer District, I think something has gone wrong with the solids.

Beautiful afternoon to see the women of the mighty Borough come down the coast to take on the Sandringham Zebras!

So aside from the obvious questions (can a lion even blow a horn? How is it holding up the horn with just its lips?), Clive Palmer's new bunch really, really need to work on their Latin.

The water at breakfast this morning seems like a good omen for the first day of #ascs2025!

On a happier note: someone in my neighborhood has what I can only assume is a giant cutout of Tintin's head.

Also, now it keeps trying out other languages?

I'm working on assessment design at the moment, so I decided to try Copilot in a use that some of my students have said they use it: finding a line (that says what they want a line to say). So far, it has made up lines it attributes to Faulkner, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and Cormac McCarthy.

Context: we climbed the only one of the Seven Summits that can be done in a morning, with a chairlift part of the way.
Really beautiful, and very much worth doing! Probably won't be zipping up Everest or Denali any time soon, though. 😄

Had a fantastic day working with a colleague and some ace material scientists to do a little experimental papyrology yesterday. Plus we even included myrrh, so it was seasonally on brand! 😄🎄

Rhythm 35 is just a 25 minute exegesis of the development of Belgian neutrality up to 1914, in midi format 😄

Amidst everything else this week, it was nice to host So Miyagawa for a talk on Coptic linguistic analysis and the works of Shenoute and Besa (and to hear a bit about his work on endangered Japanese languages, too)!

Really excited to get my hands on this handsome volume, which includes pieces by some Monash staff and alums, including from my wonderful colleague Anna Stevens on palaces, and from me on "foreign" pharaohs!

"Another innovation...were the utilidors, a sprawling network of underground service corridors connecting the different themed lands in Florida's Disney World.
The tunnels housed...hidden deliveries,...kitchens and emergency services, forming a "below-stage" warren for the theatrics above."

This might be a long-shot, but does anyone by chance recognize this building? Best guess would be Catholic, and maybe located in western or central New York.
To be fair, it might have been demolished since the photo probably dates to around 1900(?).

Just wrapped up a fantastic visit to Ann Arbor. A really great place to work on some papyri (and everything beyond the 8th floor of the Hatcher Library is pretty good too 😄)!

Congratulations to Saskia Moorrees (MA student in Monash Ancient Cultures) whose paper on wrestling-related curse tablets from Roman Athens was named runner-up for the OPTIMA Prize at the ASCS Annual Meetings this week!

Was thrilled and honored to be asked recently to speak on my research in Tokyo, and even more so to hear talks from Japanese academics and HDR students working on Egypt and Rome. Really exciting work!
(I forgot to take pictures during the workshop, so here is a scenic garden)

Good news: Victoria finally has a container deposit scheme!
Bad news: the company contracted to administer the southeast didn't think the 200,000 people living in the circled suburbs needed a nearby location?
