Thanks yes I have been looking at the lit inspired by the post. I like the horse analogy but was pondering if it would only work for “wild” horses & how this might link to schools

The control conditions still "work", they produce learning just not as well as the studied effect. Effects do seem to reduce over time. If studied effect eventually converges on the control effect performance, then over time how can we tell if our intervention had impact?
