A few years later, the uniforms were in the news again when they were sold off as government surplus. Alice Cooper (yes, that one) was eager to buy them for his roadies. He lost out to a high school marching band.
Rock musician Alice Cooper early in his career. He has big 80s hair, a black leather jacket with studs, a gentleman’s cane in his hands, and a desperate desire for a road crew with the best uniforms.

The Secret Service had to live in this indignity for several years, before the uniforms quietly went away in the mid-70s. But it gets funnier.

Richard Nixon was so inspired by his visit to Europe that he changed the uniforms of the Secret Service at the White House to, well, this:

It is the coolest flower.
A bloom of little lantana flowers, which are clustered together in multicolored rings. It looks a little like part of a reverse rainbow, with the outer rings in a vivid red, transitioning to orange, and then yellow in the middle. The leaves are a lush green.

I mean look at this. There is a logic here that I, a mere mortal, fear to comprehend.

There is a bar to hang clothes, but it has been mounted about two inches from the back of the cabinet, nowhere near enough room for the coat hangers to fit properly. Instead, the hangers have been swiveled to the side in a chaotic mess. You could technically hang things on them but they would overlap on top of each other and be impossible to quickly see and access. In a triumphant coup des grâce, the plastic holster for the iron is inexplicably mounted where the hanger bar should be, defying your pathetic Cartesian understanding of what belongs where in our world, declaring with the heat of dispassionate gravitas, “Yes, *this* was the choice. Do not complain, do not argue. It is the answer. Pray you never have to learn the question.”

Blocking the AI slop accounts that show up in the WoSo feed feels great, everyone should try.
Some garbage “news” account with a fishy name and 14 followers posting a weird article accompanied by an AI illustration of women’s soccer players that is all kinds of messy. There are two balls on the field. The goal is on the sidelines. Some of the faces haven’t fully rendered. Everyone seems to be slightly floating.

So Target mailed me a letter saying “hey please come back or else we’ll cancel your credit card” and that is so very funny.

Jelani Cobb wrote the definitive piece on this years ago and I haven’t seen anyone argue convincingly against him. This isn’t a difficult issue in the slightest.

It’s fun when a friendly scrimmage is truly friendly. Thanks to @kansascitycurrent.bsky.social for inviting the public to their scrimmage with HB Køge. WoSo is a global joy.

I’m impressed by potato batteries, meanwhile it turns out nature was quietly running the nuclear fission equivalent of Old Faithful.
The natural nuclear reactor at Oklo formed when a uranium-rich mineral deposit became inundated with groundwater, which could act as a moderator for the neutrons produced by nuclear fission. A chain reaction took place, producing heat that caused the groundwater to boil away; without a moderator that could slow the neutrons, however, the reaction slowed or stopped. The reactor thus had a negative void coefficient of reactivity, something employed as a safety mechanism in human-made light water reactors. After cooling of the mineral deposit, the water returned, and the reaction restarted, completing a full cycle every 3 hours. The fission reaction cycles continued for hundreds of thousands of years and ended when the ever-decreasing fissile materials, coupled with the build-up of neutron poisons, no longer could sustain a chain reaction.

These sorts of mishaps are not unheard of, says Marsollier. The LHC is located outside of Geneva. "We are in the countryside, and of course we have wild animals everywhere." There have been previous incidents, including one in 2009, when a bird is believed to have dropped a baguette onto critical electrical systems. Nor are the problems exclusive to the LHC: In 2006, raccoons conducted a "coordinated" attack on a particle accelerator in Illinois. It is unclear whether the animals are trying to stop humanity from unlocking the secrets of the universe. Of course, small mammals cause problems in all sorts of organizations. Yesterday, a group of children took National Public Radio off the air for over a minute before engineers could restore the broadcast.

Finally someone gets me
A vintage advertisement for Jarts, a yard game played by throwing sharp metal spikes through the air towards a plastic ring on the ground some distance away. This game, marketed to children, was responsible for more than six thousand injuries severe enough to be treated by a hospital emergency department - and that was just in eight years. Society eventually realized this was a horrible idea and banned the game.
