The normal solution is always between the opposite. Scandinavian countries, heck, the Germany for example. Why reinvent a wheel, if we can take what works and go from there?

As well as China (one "cultural revolution" is worth that title), North Korea with the permanent dynasty of Kim. There were also Khmer Rouge (child of China), but they were so crazy that Vietnam had to kill them.

Why authoritarian? Read about the GULAG, the history from the 1920s to the late 1980s. The special hospitals for dissidents. Famine. The collective farms. I could go on and on. What about Cuba? No, the same authoritarianism with Fidel at the head.

I know at least by the example of my life and the lives of my parents and relatives what I am talking about.

The Soviet Union was not the communist paradise you dream of. It was an ordinary authoritarian state with imperial ambitions. Why imperial? Ask the Czechs or the Hungarians. Or the Baltics.

A little about me: I was born and raised in the Soviet Union, lived through the early 1990s in Ukraine, moved to Germany in the early 2000s. I have friends in Poland, Czech Republic, even a couple left in Russia. I have talked to Germans from west and east.
