Whether it’s the Creature, the Amphibian Man, or Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro has an uncanny gift for humanising his cinematic monsters. His new Netflix adaptation of FRANKENSTEIN deepens the Freudian undercurrents of the original, tracing the cycle of creation and rejection with emotional clarity.

Meta-comedy and unending cameos?

Overdone.

Breaking the fourth wall?

Overdone.

Uninspired stories involving multiverses and timelines?

Overdone.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE is just another contribution to comic-book fatigue.

BUGONIA is a dark and hilarious satirical mirror of the current state of humanity. It’s hard to talk about the film without giving away too much of its plot, but if you’re looking for another mind-blowing and philosophical work from Yorgos Lanthimos and his muse Emma Stone, then don’t miss this.

A QUIET PLACE DAY ONE is a moving horror & drama. It shows the beginnings of the Quiet Place universe with the same suspenseful direction, while touching on human connection, how we hold on to poetry & memory during hopeless moments. And who wouldn’t enjoy an adventure that involves an adorable cat?

The premise of Kimberly Akimbo seems quite random, but it ended up being a heartwarming tale about misfits, perspective, and living the present. #melbourne #theatre

IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT was a wild ruckus of a dark comedy. It’s excellent filmmaking when tension keeps increasing while exposition is revealed gradually in unexpected moments. The latest Palme d’Or winner is a memorable tale of moral responsibility told within the confines of an oppressive regime.

CACTUS PEARS is a beautiful film, and I was completely immersed in its rich cultural detail. The portrayal of conservative dynamics feels strikingly familiar, even though it’s a society I’m not intimately acquainted with. The tender family drama and love story resonate far beyond its setting. #miff

The classic murder mystery was given a modern twist in this fringe production of DIAL M FOR MURDER. Each act leaps forward by several decades, suggesting that tales of domestic violence have endured through time. #theatre #melbourne

TROPHY BOYS is a comedy about a debating team of privileged private school boys who had all the language and sensitivity for discussing women’s issues — until they didn’t. #melbourne #theatre

The dynamics of rural, corrupt, and conservative Philippines is something I’m quite familiar with. This backdrop is used brilliantly in FIRST LIGHT, a meditation on faith, death, and the value of life. A worthy and important debut from Filipino Australian filmmaker James Robinson. #miff2025

The reimagined Melbourne production of Songs for a New World was overflowing with emotion. The design and lighting were simple yet elegant, and the choreography was expressive yet restrained, highlighting both voices and human stories. Every cast member was flawless, hitting every note perfectly.

Memories can be controversial when revisiting abandonment and grief. Tennessee Williams explores this as an aftermath of living with an overbearing matriarch in THE GLASS MENAGERIE. This limited-run production is unmissable, with exceptional performances and an intimately beautiful stage design.

When GOOD WILL HUNTING came out almost thirty years ago, I was still in high school and didn’t have the capacity to fully grasp its themes. After a rewatch, I was honestly mindblown by how brilliant and near-perfect the film is. Every monologue was powerfully sublime.

Adam Elliot has this magical and humane way of portraying neurodivergence and personality disorders, and his second full-length MEMOIR OF A SNAIL is a heartbreaking yet life-affirming work of art.

The last entertaining animated film that captured the zeitgeist was The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and Sony has achieved this again with KPop Demon Hunters, a playful allegory on how pop culture pushes celebrities towards perfection while simultaneously exploiting and masking insecurities of fans.

James Gunn is punk rock.

The Suicide Squad is my favourite DCEU entry. James has a way of layering ethical tension beneath the humour and sci-fi chaos. SUPERMAN brings that, with the added nostalgia of the Lois-Clark romance and the iconic John Williams score. Definitely worth the wait.

It’s easy to get invested in GREEN BONES, as the characters reflect familiar archetypes in the Philippines. This take on redemption is emotionally well-acted, and the hopeful conclusion makes one wonder if art remains aspirational, especially in the context of the regressing state of the country.

The distortion of science and illusion of progress that underpin colonial legacies were unpacked beautifully in The Wrong Gods. The dialogue was layered yet accessible, and the soil-toned minimalist staging laid the groundwork for this powerful, emotional work. Best show at MTC since Admissions.
