The state had a very powerful incentive not to admit to malfeasance and that likely protected them back then.. No such incentive exists right now and almost certainly less protection from prosecution

If the only way of separating this stuff in bulk is temperature then there are quite literally hundreds of plausible ratios of C, H, O and the occasional N that make structures that boil within a couple degrees of one another
