turns out, figtext is a pyplot method so no way to intervene on the axes. This seems to work fine though,

use
plt.figtext(0,.01,"put a note here", ha="left", fontsize=8)

Reading this passage from Chapter 32 of Pride and Prejudice it occurred to me: is Darcy on the spectrum? Taciturn, steadfast gaze, social awkwardness, truthful when most inconvenient (think of the first proposal). It makes an entirely different reading of the novel (this is my 3d time)
