A planetary nebula shaped like two rounded lobes meeting at a bright white core. The gas glows in warm reds, oranges, and yellows, fading into gray toward the edges. Thin filaments and translucent layers give it a soft, textured look. The surrounding space is filled with small, sharp stars on a black background. Olympus Mons is a vast, circular shield volcano with gently sloping sides and a well-defined summit caldera at its center. This was part of the latest release on psa.esa.int by @esa.int
A black and white image taken from orbit over Mars shows a wide view of the planet's surface, with Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano on Mars, in the lower right and the dust storm on the upper left. The volcano's massive caldera is clearly visible as a large circular depression with radiating ridges and steep outer flanks. In the upper left quadrant of the image, a bright, textured dust storm cloud appears over Amazonis Planitia. The cloud has a rippled, clustered appearance, contrasting sharply with the darker terrain. This image wants to emphasize how big is this cloud which would cover large part of the Olympus Mons surface.
