I keep explaining Plato's allegory of the cave to her, but she keeps chasing shadows anyway.

Whelp, guess I'm an enemy of the state now for all of my research on #COVID19 and #ConspiracyTheory

Things are very, very bad, but I've got foster kittens and they are pure and good. And dumb. So. Very. Dumb. #kittens #cats #AdoptDontShop

Hello Monday.

Yesterday Gus let his intrusive thoughts win and jumped into a very full bathtub. His little legs couldn't touch the bottom, so he floated for the few seconds it took to rescue him. Gus then decided that wet cats are incapable of movement and sat in the corner until he dried off.

Memorial University's Folklore program take a picture of you and your committee at your PhD defense and posts it on the wall of the seminar room, which is pretty great when you go back to visit and speak with the graduate students.

Day 27 is another YA novel because YA horror is pretty damn scary and FULL of death these days! This one has cults, fan experiences, and diverse characters. You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron.

I almost forgot to post today's author and book (it's my birthday and it was a busy day)! Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward another from the "you're kidding yourself if you don't think this is horror" category. Maybe just accept that you might like #horror?

Day 25 is a book I read awhile ago, but it's still great. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.

Today I saw a squirrel with a can of Red Bull near Burt Reynolds' grave at Hollywood Forever cemetery. No notes. Chef's kiss. Perfect day. Nature is beautiful.

Day 24 is another re-imagining, but this time it's inspired by Carrie about the not-so-subtle racism that happens in small towns and colorism. The Weight of Blood by Tiffany B. Jackson.

Day 23 already? Time for One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon. Inspired by Stepford Wives, this novel is about a town where everything isn't what it seems.

Day 22, let's talk about Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen. This one is a great re-imagining of the Mami Wata with folktale elements and structure.

Day 21 and I've got to mention The Secret Life of a Black Aspie by Anand Prahlad. This is one of my favorite books to use in my Disability Studies class and today I'm just hoping to be able to teach it again in the future.

Day 20 is Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. It's a stunning critique of the prison system in the US where the imprisoned can fight to the death, gladiator style, to gain their freedom.

Day 19 and just one more academic book, I promise. Passed On: African American Mourning Stories by
Karla FC Holloway is a fantastic book about death in African American culture.

I told myself don't do academic, but have you read Nightriders by Gladys-Marie Fry? 1975 but feels so relevant & shuts down that whole "black people are more superstitious than white people" bs that I hear so often as a folklorist. Very approachable, you'll like it!

Day 17 and I would be a bad folklorist if I didn't include Mules and Men by Zora Neale Hurston. I think her other works get more attention, but this is an excellent collection of Black folklore and we're lucky to have it.
