MAY QUEEN SETTING TRAPS IN THE MIDST OF DREAMS

*the idea of setting traps ”in the midst of dreams” is from “Anecdote of the Prince of Peacocks” by Wallace Stevens

So much about painting is similar to writing poetry. You start with a few lines and have no idea where they’ll take you. And when you think you’re almost done and you add a detail, the whole piece changes.

Sometimes language falls away and the line that would be script becomes a sketch. Sometimes the moon is full and turbulent and there's nothing one can do but retreat to the quiet paper and leave behind unspoken marks.

I'm sketching to explore ideas for a series of larger works in acrylic and thinking about the connection between imagined and real spaces, and the idea of home. As an immigrant, I’ve spent my adult life thinking of home and what it means to make a home abroad.

Lately I’ve been revisiting some unfinished pieces. This one started as a watercolor skyscape I got stuck on about a year ago and set aside. When I picked it up again and turned the paper sideways, I noticed these two figures starting to emerge from the colors.
