I ask, What do you know about this problem?” After a few times the student starts to suspect I will ask this every time and usually can articulate something. The key is to not inadvertently sound sarcastic. You really want to find a starting point for a conversation

The human factor in teaching is not measurable and cannot be replicated. I understand that education is expensive but it is worth it to pay trained teachers and tutors to work with students
