We likened this to the familiarity of an old home - knowing where the light switches are even in the dark, knowing to skip the squeaky step on your way up the stairs - and the time needed to adapt to your new surroundings once you move.

Couldn't agree more! I often see people trying to over-engineer solutions in the building industry. Since moving to London, the best "smart enough" solution I've seen is the writing they've painted directly on roads at busy intersections, telling tourists which way to look before crossing.
