Don't get me wrong, he still encourages people to learn programming because it can be a useful skill. He just tries to talk people out of making a career out of it.

My dad (a semi-retired programmer) has been trying to talk people out of getting into programming for years for this very reason.

And you wouldn't have to artificially inflate desire for your product to be viable. When people wanted your product, you could be there for them. When people didn't, you could still survive.
