"I have to be pragmatic – it’s not like I have some holy desk.."
Love the bareness, functionality of the desk. Enough with those pretty posies, classics addled and carefully adorned desks.

David Szalay won the Booker Prize for Flesh last night. That's his desk -- plain, anti-aesthetic, thread bare. A win for anti-aesthetes everywhere.

2025 📚 66: Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill
A tight, visceral, fully realized portrait of a failing marriage. I read Offill's Weather first and then arrived at this. This is a timeless tale of relationships, child rearing, everyday travesties, but told from an innovative, fragmented structure.

Had so much fun reading the "zip and rumble" of the off-road bike trip from London to Paris over four days with @susborne.bsky.social & co. Almost felt as if I was with them!

Loved how out of the blue pops up a reference to Switchfoot's Dare You to Move in this Jia Tolentino profile of Jennifer Lawrence in the recent @newyorker.com. This song was such a favourite; I discovered it from one of the Twilight movies (for which Lawrence auditioned for the role of Bella Swan).

In the climax, when the door is finally removed, a strong stink emanates from the room, and as many as nine cats flee from the apartment.
I love this novel!

Seamus Heaney's Black Walnuts encapsulates the essence of autumn and why it remains such a force of love and wonder. His collected works are out now.

This Ian Penman @lrb.co.uk essay on Brian Eno is beautiful, good old, curious, culture writing. The way it opens will stay with me for so, so long. Powerful, moving writing! An essay for the ages.

Lots to ponder upon here. I’d add my two bits: once upon a time there were design-centric movies like Jacques Tatti’s and I’m sure also similarly obsessed literature. Now in books and movies what we have is a parody of all forms of design and architecture in life.
