If I can't tell that I already know you, i'm going to block you
Do any of you have environmental charities you recommend? I'd love to look into donating myself and to spread the word!

and City Blossoms: cityblossoms.org a local DC organization that works with local DC schools to help expand green spaces throughout the city and let kids learn about all the wonderful things you can grow.

A last couple for my DC locals that I found on www.cfp-dc.org/cfpdc/nonpro... (an organization that evaluates local DC charities too small to make it to the big charity ratings sites):
City Wildlife: citywildlife.org/donate/ a local animal rehabilitation center in DC

Triangle Land Conservancy www.triangleland.org is a wetlands conservation organization in North Carolina, managing and conserving 23000 acres of land in conjunction with locals, and maintains 8 parks the public can visit and enjoy!
April 21, 2024 at 8:12 PM
Appalachian Voices appvoices.org works with and in local communities to create healthy ecosystems and resilient local economies by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and unsafe chemical manufacturing as the main industry in much of Appalachia.
April 21, 2024 at 7:59 PM
National Forest Foundation www.nationalforests.org works to reforest already deforested land in the United States, revitalizing ecosystems across the country. They also maintain trails so everyone can enjoy our national forests
April 21, 2024 at 7:39 PM
They have a whole host of other programs if you're more interested in helping to protect another part of the world or a particular animal as well! (Malaysian tigers have a 2x match right now, 3x matches for programs in Liberia and South Sudan, a 2x match for a wildlife cooridor in Mexico)

to achieve that in--potentially just this presidential term--and that the bureaucratic process of designating that land as protected can take years
April 21, 2024 at 7:03 PM
Right now they have a 4x match on their Brazillion Rainforest program which is aiming to protect 20 million acres of undisturbed rainforest. They point out that with the current Brazilian president, there is a real chance to designate government land as protected but we have a very short window

Rainforest Trust www.rainforesttrust.org/urgent-proje... benefits from being a large, established organization that is also incredibly lean organization with 100% of donor funds going directly to the programs you choose to donate to.
April 21, 2024 at 6:48 PM
here is a link directly to their donation form because it was SO HARD to find this year (I think they broke their regular donation link while trying to set up something fancy for earth month) secure.givelively.org/donate/amazo...

from illegal logging and gold mining, as well as tools for local sustainable industrial practices like brazil nut and goji berry harvesting by removing economic barriers that degrade people's living conditions as well as the natural environment
April 21, 2024 at 6:31 PM
Amazon Conservation www.amazonconservation.org (not to be confused with many other similarly named organizations) works with local communities in Peru and Bolivia to preserve and protect the rainforest. They help provide tools for local communities to monitor and protect their own natural resources
April 21, 2024 at 6:28 PM
They do the only thing multinationals really fear: sue.

Honestly, they do a lot of really great work that is simply not possible any other way.
April 21, 2024 at 5:45 PM
That you really NEED some people whose entire specialty is negotiating that morass. Enter CIEL, more or less. They protect the indigenous communities targetted by national interests for 'standing in the way' of environmental destruction. They get the legislation passed.
April 21, 2024 at 5:44 PM
Next is Ciel www.ciel.org the Center for International Environmental Law. This organization really makes a huge difference because so much about protecting the environment and any hope of reversing global climate change is swathed in yards of red tape and bureaucratic hurdles and commerical interest
April 21, 2024 at 5:42 PM
positions that conflict with wild habitats around them
April 21, 2024 at 5:22 PM
First, I'll start with Wild Earth Allies wildearthallies.org that work in collaboration with local communities and organizations to preserve the natural environment. They both work with indigenous communities to preserve existing cultural practice as well help ensure communities aren't put into

Today I am back with less soggy charities if your heart doesn't lie with the waves

One of the things about islands is that by virtual of that separation from a mainland, you often find entirely unique species there. You also frequently find species that have gone extinct everywhere else, and this small pocket of an island has kept the flora and fauna safe (usually from us)

Meanwhile, seagrass captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests, accounting for 10-18% of world carbon storage desipte covering less than .1% of the seafloor
April 20, 2024 at 4:38 PM
And inland wetlands may sequester as much as 10 times MORE carbon than coastal wetlands (and we've destroyed so many inland wetlands especially)

it's already common knowledge how essential rainforests are--this isn't detracting from that. it's just showing how important wetlands actually are
April 20, 2024 at 4:31 PM
I know so far it's been a lot of wetlands but that's because wetlands are so essential to the health of the planet. Mangroves and coastal wetlands store 3 to 5 times more carbon per equivalent area of tropical rainforest, and they store it at a rate 10 times greater than mature tropical rainforest
April 20, 2024 at 4:26 PM
I love Seacology's work www.seacology.org to help preserve fragile island habitats. They have over 400 programs in 68 countries protecting over a million acres of habitate because they partner with local organizations to protect local habitats from destruction.
April 20, 2024 at 3:30 PM
They partner with local landowners and conservationists to put aside land that would otherwise be torn out for agricultural use and keep it wild, helping to build up the local economy on conservation instead. (They also have some parks you can visit if you're ever in their areas!)
