We're trying to follow Jesus in the 21st-century.

It ain't easy.
The incomparable James Baldwin again reminds us that we're all caught up with one another. We are profoundly intertwined, whether we like it or not. Whether we recognize it or not. Whether we believe it or not.

Love does many things. It is the "greatest of these," according to St. Paul. It also guards our hearts against the bottomless abyss – leave it to a musician to speak so poetically on love.

Goodness is more complicated than evil – it takes conscious dedication to embrace the former instead of succumbing to the latter.

"The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it."

Flannery O'Connor (1925–1964) reminds us that truth isn't malleable based on our own whims. In other words: facts don't care about our feelings.

"What is to give light must endure burning."

Viktor Frankl (1905-1997), Austrian neurologist, philosopher, and Holocaust survivor, naming a deep truth for all times.

May we open our ears and eyes – our hearts, even – to the world around us, while trying our best to abstain from judging that very same world. May we be led with curiosity instead of contempt. For observation on its own is a powerful, holy thing.

Human ingenuity and technology has given us better weapons and more inventive ways to kill each other – but still we wait for similar upgrades when it comes to how we relate to each other.

May tomorrow's sunrise find us doing the work we've always been called to.

The poor tell us who we are. The prophets tell us who we can be.
So we hide the poor and kill the prophets.

–Philip Berrigan

Christianity has failed every test when it comes to the poor and the prophets. We can do better. We MUST do better.

True story: if you understood fascism and began to resist it *before* the U.S. entered the Second World War against Nazi Germany, you were designated by the government as being "prematurely anti-fascist."

Because it's only appropriate to be against fascism when the U.S. wants to be against it.

The question is: can we hold both together? Life IS death, but it's not only that.

Where have you found joy today?

Rest well, dear servant.

"As often occurs in periods of deep crisis which require bold decisions, we are tempted to think that what is happening is not entirely clear..."

Pope Francis I (1936-2025)

The AC Three discuss one of the more timely and relevant movies ever made, especially as it pertains to the church: Conclave (2024) – what does it say about power, about our leaders, about how we live in community with one another, and about where true authority lies?

A word from David Lynch (1946-2025) to all those who persist with ignorance and hate. As John the Baptizer would say: "Bear fruits worthy of repentance!"

May your name be a blessing, good sir.

As we honor the life of Dr. King this week, let us not be lulled into complacency with words of his taken out of context – one of the honored pastimes of white America – but instead, let us dive deeper into the unsettling wisdom he shared with us.

@crazypastor.bsky.social & @tvrasche.bsky.social sat down with @revtdanderson.bsky.social to talk about how Bible stories can be funny, the ontological Blackness of Jesus, & what it means that Jesus' first public sign is shown first to those on the margins.

In this Advent season culminating in Jesus' birth, we primarily hear stories surrounding his death. Life is full of change, and in every change we witness the death of a part of ourselves (however small, however hoped-for). Life, then, is full of death. We must hold both together.

Light is fallen all around us. What we need is the patience to see it, to recognize it, to nurture it.
