Buyers aren’t just “johns”. Most of the world economic system is implicated. If we actually want to “end demand” for trafficking (and I’m talking about ALL forms of trafficking), you need to tackle the real root cause — the economic system itself.

“But we need buyer accountability!” okay, who is holding the buyers of products made in U.S. prisons accountable? Buyers of products made with child and forced labor in global supply chains? What about holding the largest buyer of commercial sex, the U.S. military, accountable?

This is also why you never hear demand reductionists talk about labor trafficking. Ending demand for forced & child labor would require society to be restructured entirely, and also necessitates the removal of the prison system they rely on for so-called “justice”.

This story would also be a GREAT jumping off point to talk about the need for living wage jobs & the increased criminalization of poverty. Unfortunately, I think Rachel Dolezal is one of the worst case examples of this kind of thing, so back to the drawing board we go!

Like yeah this shit is sad, grief is real, AND how are we creating strategies for communities to sustain the changes that need to happen HERE so that people globally can build power… Individualism will be the death of us if we aren’t thinking long term + collectively :/
