We have written to the Presidents of the Medical Royal Colleges to draw their attention to the staggering revelations over GMC decision-making that came to light in our judicial review.
June 26, 2025 at 9:43 AM
The decision by the GMC to not set scope was not identifiable.

The GMC had the power to have done so had it so wished

Despite our persistent questioning they have not adequately explained their reasons for making this decision.

A good day in court, with Mrs Justice Lambert taking a lot of interest in the GMC's decision-making processes.

We hope to have a judgement by the end of July.

We will post a proper summary of the hearing tomorrow.

Doctors are being replaced by associates. But why did the medical regulator make that so easy?

We were even more shocked by Prof Melville's statement on how the GMC reached the decision not to set scope -- no identifiable decision, decision-maker nor review

Emily Chesterton thought she had seen a doctor.

Her mother will explain to the court what happened next.

NHS employers are driven by finance and reducing waiting lists - and will push the boundaries of what associates can do.

There is clear evidence that this has already caused serious harm.

Seeing isn’t the same as truly understanding.

It requires depth of understanding, not shortcuts.

And that’s why PAs will never be a real substitute for doctors.

Diagnostic error is the most common, most costly, and most dangerous of medical mistakes.

So why take the risk of being diagnosed by a PA?

AU and the parents of Emily Chesterton will be in court next Tuesday.

Parliament set a duty for the medical regulator to determine standards of experience and performance for Physician Associates.

The GMC had the power.

Our judicial review is on May 13th.

The available evidence does not support PAs independently diagnosing and managing undifferentiated patients, acting as senior decision makers or supervising residents.

Knowledge about ‘how things work around here’, and competent communication skills, are important but must not be conflated with having medical knowledge and skill.

See you in court. May 13th.

Entry qualifications
Training requirements
Grades of registration
Independent/dependent practice
Post-qualification training paths
Revalidation

In summary, doctors and associates belong to fundamentally different professions

The Montgomery judgement was very clear.

Would you want to know if you were being treated by an associate?

Everyone expected that regulation would do what it says on the tin.

Instead, the GMC approach to post-qualification practice is hollow and empty.

We think the system for regulating doctors is not appropriate for regulating associates.

So do our lawyers.

Please help us raise the money we need to take this to court.

The rest of the world looks at what is happening in the UK with Associates and shakes its head in despair.

Now the World Medical Council has passed resolutions in the interest of UK patient safety

A review of the evidence shows that the strongest evidence for the safe and effective practice of PAs comes from studies in which they are working under direct supervision of a doctor and in a defined scope of practice.
