Yeah, and people keep asking me for a source, but the only material reference i can think of is a sticker I saw with a woman sitting on Bush Sr.s lap with a wine glass saying "Fuck the patriarchy" with a caption "Wine moms for war." I can't find it online.

Maybe it wasn't "a thing." My bad.

Thank you for mansplaining misogyny to a feminist, now please explain why black people aren't allowed to say "uncle tom."

By tying your normal Denny's outing to the culture of influencers and affluenza, you're signaling that the lifestyle of exclusion and decadence is what you aspire to. You're still trying to flash money, but you're doing it at Denny's.

(Actually, you probably just eat there. It's normal.)
April 21, 2025 at 4:57 AM
It's heralded as a cure for hangovers for Saturday night party goers in college towns, going to gentrified neighborhoods to take pictures of $20 cinnamon buns and $15 cocktails.

"But I don't do that, I go to Denny's!"

Sure, but millions of people can't go to Denny's either.
April 21, 2025 at 4:54 AM
The media and Instagram influencers portray "doing brunch" as a social ritual rather than a meal. It has a dress code. It has a lingo. It has an element of aspirational affluence. It's mid morning timing is given special attention because of its relation to the privileged work schedule.
April 21, 2025 at 4:52 AM
Lol, can't handle a single miniscule examination of privilege. "Oh, you're gonna shoot me for Denny's?!" Hysterical take.
April 21, 2025 at 4:48 AM
In my city there's a new Brunch place by the park. It advertises crab legs, lobster, and bottomless mimosa on its brunch spread. A lot of public seating was taken away because brunch goers parked nearby and didn't like "homeless people" by their cars.
April 21, 2025 at 4:45 AM
Lol. The rage.

What's with this black and white thinking? Dive Bars? Denny's? Those aren't "brunch culture" that we see in the media. You can have Denny's whenever man.

But give me a few messages to break this down I hate the character limit.
April 21, 2025 at 4:43 AM
One last thing: when you say "moderately priced," that's laughably privileged. Millions of people depend on food stamps, millions more live paycheck-to-paycheck. Meanwhile, the media holds up "doing brunch" as a means to cosplay aspirational affluence for college kids and 9-5ers in big cities.
April 21, 2025 at 4:03 AM
You sound like someone who needs to go outside. I don't just mean the walk from your car to the Waffle Lab or whatever, either.

If you don't get why brunch culture is seen as bougie and out of touch, you're probably bougie and out of touch.
April 21, 2025 at 3:49 AM
A lot of neighborhoods have seen places pop up specifically to cater to the type of people who only go to restaurants to post on Instagram.
April 21, 2025 at 3:31 AM
I mean I can really only speak for my tribe. I don't know what the right are complaining about.

From the left, though, going out for food in the late morning is normal and not really worth a special name, whereas "brunch culture" is a bougie ritual of indulgence and gentrification.
April 21, 2025 at 3:28 AM
I think it's one of those had to be there kinda things, to be honest. I guess the modern usage has kinda taken over the way the right destroyed "woke."
April 21, 2025 at 3:20 AM
I mean it was similar to the phrase "champagne socialist." Wine being associated with decadence and mom being an older woman with social authority.

So the vibe was an older woman who was interested in maintaining access to luxury through compliance while still claiming feminism.
April 21, 2025 at 3:19 AM
"Wine mom" has been a thing since the 80's at least, evoking an image of a sheltered Reaganite with shelves covered in feminist-coded decor telling other women the struggle is over and they just need to get in the mindset to find a husband.
April 20, 2025 at 11:16 PM
Firstly using Wikipedia as a source for cultural issues is cringe, go outside.

Secondly, while I'm sure it's been used that way by some less critical people, that's not the way it was meant in the left-wing spaces I can speak about.
April 20, 2025 at 11:10 PM
All these people are missing a really obvious connection that has nothing to do with gender:

Brunch used to be the time you got cheap leftovers, and now it's people buying overpriced mimosas and bragging about their money.
April 20, 2025 at 9:49 PM
"Wine mom" has nothing to do with wine or moms, actually. It implies a detached, privileged lifestyle that is simultaneously appropriating select progressive morals while justifying itself with materialistic consumerist posturing. Decadence and judgment dressed as pop feminism.
April 20, 2025 at 9:27 PM
Brunch became gentrified. It became trendy. You dress up and go to brunch now. People sit in gimmick restaurants that charge $25 for three eggs and post it to socials to show off while they lecture "the poors."
April 20, 2025 at 9:19 PM
No, it's because we're sick of hearing lectures about how all our problems are a mindset issue from people who never had a nap for dinner.
April 20, 2025 at 8:48 PM
Stalin changed the definition of "socialism" to "whatever the socialist party does" and shot everyone who disagreed.
April 20, 2025 at 6:26 PM
The irony of neoliberals using "real communism has never been tried" to mock communists when they constantly claim socialist thought (Keynesianism, the Nordic model) to be capitalist and claim the gilded age was "not real capitalism."

Even Lenin said the USSR was capitalist...
April 20, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Bet.
April 20, 2025 at 3:09 PM
We should have been nicer to suburban pop punks. Born too high up to see what burns in the furnace below, but not high enough for decadence to plaster over the spiritual depletion of capitalism. A dire artifice of levers and mirrors.

All they could do was scream and hope something cracked.

These are people who think they're master strategists trying to engineer a landslide with a lab-grown candidate. Centrists either don't care about politics, or it's a horse race.
