Claudia Sheinbaum just gave her first State of the Union address ("informe de la nación) which included references to immigration justice, education reform, poverty reduction, etc. A standout moment was when she referred to the Gulf of Mexico--and then repeated it for emphasis--inspiring applause.

I published an article in Salon about Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum--and how international media can/should do a better job of representing her and her politics: www.salon.com/2025/07/15/c...
Claudia Sheinbaum has a story to tell — and we need to listen
Mexico's president is being defined in relation to powerful men. Allowing that to happen will be our loss

Hundreds of American rabbis have protested Netanyahu’s mass murder in Gaza but they rarely get any media attention. That also happened in February 2015 when more than 400 rabbis from Britain and around the world called on Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the demolition of Palestinian homes.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

this is the level of funding where all the possibilities for American politics that have been described as hyperbolic over the past decades - the comparisons to Nazi Germany and other nightmares of the 20th century - become logistically possible and politically likely
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

When ICE agents look like this, it is ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE for state and local law enforcement to step in and demand they identify themselves and show judicial warrants before detaining anyone from an immigration court.

Democratic mayor and governors can take action on this.

By my count, there had been 103 lawsuits filed in the last 20 days, and judges had issued 50 restraining orders requiring the Trump administration to reverse the terminations. Those decisions came in more than 23 states. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...
