One more day until these books will be together forever! (And not just in my head.) I can't wait to share Face to Face: A Novel of the Reformation with you all.

Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon: I love you all, and I loved telling your stories!

This photo reminds me of one of my favorite song lyrics…

“Oh, where do we begin:
The rubble or our sins?”

Let every one of us begin with OUR sins. Let’s own our part of the problem and realize that the ultimate solution is the grace of God, forgiveness of sins, and resurrection from the dead.

Some say my previous visits to the sceptered isle were equally destructive. I can neither confirm nor deny.

It’s Therese of Lisieux’s feast day, and I really ought to be sharing a contemplative quote from her or something, but what I really want to do is show you this photo of her dressed as Joan of Arc, because it will never not be awesome.

“The dove descending breaks the air
With flame of incandescent terror
Of which the tongues declare
The one dischage from sin and error.
The only hope, or else despair
Lies in the choice of pyre or pyre-
To be redeemed from fire by fire”

- T.S. Eliot, “Little Gidding”

Just me tapping the sign again, because Resurrection Day is coming.

How nice that on his feast day, I come across this great quote from Gregory the Great: “Whoever gathers all the virtues without humility, carries as it were dust into the wind.”

(Quoted in Grace Hamman’s new book, Ask of Old Paths!)

Society is a mess. Things are getting violent. God seems silent. Friendships are breaking. The earth is quaking. But huzzah, we've got engagement news!

No, it's not America 2025. It's Germany 1525. Pre-order my novel "Face to Face" today.

Today is St. Bernard of Clairvaux’s feast day. A complex guy who opposed heretics and unbelievers, changed the face of monasticism, and left us with beautiful writings.

But since I love weird medieval stuff, here he is being squirted in the eye with Mary’s breast milk.

Today is the Lord’s Day, and we are citizens of his kingdom, adopted as sons and daughters. Therefore, we need not fear the machinations of the kingdoms of this world, the tribulations of life, the passing of time. For soon comes the reign of our Savior. All shall be well.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, & what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.”

- Ephesians 1:18-19B (NASB95)

Today is St. Dominic’s feast day, so time for an old joke.

The Dominicans were founded to counter the Albigensians. The Jesuits were founded to counter the Protestants.

There are no more Albigensians. 😏😉

Even as they beheld his glory, so we now know him in the glory of his cross and resurrection, awaiting the glory yet to be revealed. And always the Father testifies about him,

“This is My beloved Son! Listen to Him!”

The light has broken in to darkness. The King comes to set captives free. Dead bones will live again. Evil is defeated.

This is the reality we cannot see. By faith we believe there is one who loves us more than we can possibly imagine, and he is coming to rescue us.

A happy bunch of blooms from the garden: dill, bergamot, lavender, borage, St. John’s wort. Medieval Europeans loved these blooms. They are still a reminder of God’s goodness: that he preserved our ancestors and will preserve us.

Peter AND Paul?! In this economy?!

Yes, in this and every economy, friends. God gave us both of them. I highly recommend their published works.

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways;
To give to His people the knowledge of salvation
By the forgiveness of their sins”

“And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in unity. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance.”

Happy 500th wedding anniversary to Martin and Katharina Luther! It was so much fun writing about the early part of their relationship in my forthcoming novel, Face to Face. I brought a celebratory cake to our church staff. Playmobil Martin and Katie approved!

There is so much of hell on planet earth right now, and yet something of heaven remains. This is where l stopped to pray today: a quiet place with the audible buzzing of bees and trickling of water. This life, this earth is our purgation, but if the Son of Man stands with us, we will be preserved.
