Looks like it's down for maintenance, but NYU's Databrary has a solid collection of videos and datasets related to developmental research/tasks. You need to go through an authorization process but it is relatively quick.

I still don’t have a good conclusion for the ordeal, other than confidence I will never use SurveyMonkey for an experimental procedure again (switching to Qualtrics as soon as my SM subscription is over) and that mentorship is sometimes messy but always valuable. (END)

It gave us a good opportunity to discuss disappointments and challenges in the research process and she handled everything with far more maturity and grace than I would be able to at her age.

Ultimately, my student will still be able to analyze some of her research questions pertaining to perceptions of misinformation contained in each video. I’m still extremely proud of the work she’s dedicated to this project, and the ingenuity of the research question and design.

(ESPECIALLY CONFUSING one of the excel files that is created when you export SM data is named Page Order.xlsx but alas this only tells you the page order for participants who do not finish your survey).

That if I wanted to know page order then I needed to have upgraded my subscription to use the “Block Randomization” feature. I responded I would have done that if it was clear that Page Randomization did not track the order of pages

but have ZERO idea what type of immigrant-related campaign ad was persuasive at that moment. I begged and raged at SurveyMonkey to give us any data about the order the videos were presented in. They responded the metadata is immediately deleted after participants complete the survey.

Here’s what I know, of the 164 participants who answered the question, “Which candidate would you be most likely to vote for” 51.22% responded Candidate A (The first video they watched) and 48.78% responded Candidate B (The second video they watched).

And b.c we phrased the voting question to avoid political biases, we cannot tell if our participants endorsed the pro- or anti- immigrant message. That we collected. From a diverse set of young people. Right before and after the 2024 presidential election.

Here’s where the nightmare started. After working on this project for close to a year, going through multiple revisions through the IRB, pilot testing, and intensive recruitment, when we downloaded the data, we had no way to determine which video participants saw first.

She collected responses from 178 college-aged participants from October 31st- to November 12th 2024. I was really proud of the diversity of the sample- 15% Asian American or Middle Eastern, 12% Black, 33% Hispanic, 40% White. 31% identified as Left-leaning, 25.15% identifying as Right-leaning

On the final page of our survey, participants completed a simulated vote twice. The first forcing students to vote for either the first campaign video they saw or second campaign video and the same question with an option to vote for neither candidate.

We used the “page randomization” feature of SurveyMonkey to prevent order effects, as any good within-subject design would do. After watching each video, participants rated their perceptions of misinformation and their willingness to endorse each candidate.

Participants would be shown two TikTok videos (one designed as a campaign ad portraying the dangers of immigration, one designed as a campaign featuring pro-immigration messages) presented in random order. Both videos were pre-tested and balanced to contain misleading information on each side.

Because I already pay for a SurveyMonkey Business account for some program evaluation work, I recommended she use it to collect her data. Granted, SurveyMonkey is primarily designed for marketing and surveys and is not a particularly good for experiments. However, her design was simple enough..

In 2023, a student approached me about a Senior’s Honor project. She wanted to explore how TikTok misinformation influenced endorsements of political candidates & how perceptions of maturity moderate willingness to vote. We walked through the experimental procedure, measure selection, IRB, etc.

based on a developmental theory and 2-3 research studies (or credible sources like SRCD, American Academy of Pediatrics, of NICHD). they have to then propose a public policy based on their conclusions.. happy to send my instructions/rubric if you want to share an email address
