A springtime trip to Buenos Aires was where I first encountered jacarandas, which is absolutely part of why I love LA’s so much

So much is terrible these days but it's also jacaranda season in Los Angeles, which is beautiful from the ground and absolutely stunning from air.

University of California has banned diversity statements in the hiring process because "the requirement to submit a diversity statement may lead applicants to focus on an aspect of their candidacy that is outside their expertise or prior experience."
By that logic, what about teaching statements?

Estimates suggest that the travel speed and emissions reductions benefits of congestion pricing were *greatest* in areas with the *lowest* median household incomes.

It’s been 8/10ths of a mile and 13 minutes and you’re finally at your bus stop to the entire west side of LA. You get sign of the routes, if/when your bus will arrive, no restroom, no attendants/employees. Just you in a sea of parking lots and jet fuel fumes.

This means you cross 96th at the unmarked crosswalk directly into the (drum roll) LAX City Bus Center! Look at your welcoming environs. A perfect view of the massive new parking garage. Nary a sign to be found telling you this is a bus center for the most populous metro outside of NY city.
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
Now you’re at this delightful intersection of 96th Street and the 5-lane “Sky Way” overpass to/from LAX terminals. You have to cross but the button doesn’t work or isn’t hot, so you turn up the road to cross a block later (after passing another parking lot).
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You cross another street and walk a block between a utility/construction site of LA Department of Water & Power and — you guessed it — another parking lot.
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You walk past a private parking garage for a block.
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You walk past the valet parking lot of the Hyatt Regency for a block (foreshadowing of a theme).
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You cross Sepulveda Boulevard at Century, which has two (2!) right turn lanes that seem to have a green light with the walk signal and drivers who generally act like sharks in chummed waters as you cross your 7th and 8th lane of traffic.
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
For your bus you keep walking past the Uber/Lyft lot, past an employee parking lot, and then you get to a crosswalk of an 8 lane Sepulveda Boulevard. You try not to “dart” (heaven forfend) across the blind slip lane to the pedestrian island. You feel like a sitting duck.
March 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You land at Terminal A and walk out. About 100 yards away is a bustling hub for… your bus?! No, it’s for Uber and Lyft. It’s well lit & signed, there are bathrooms and picnic benches. I.e., a relatively nice space for humans, who can pay $55 to travel 6 miles.

The official press release from USDOT. Not holding those proverbial cards close to the chest about the review of the high-speed rail budget.
