This little beauty of nature made it through some crazy storms yesterday. Hail nearby (not us!), torrential downpours, floods, and sind gusts that laid the milkweed horizontal!
This mesquite tree sheltered it from the brunt of the storm. Queen caterpillar is doing well! ❤️

Chrysalis watch: Day 5!

For context, here's a picture from someone on the Phoenix subreddit, with the clustered hail last night. Several neighborhoods looked like it had snowed. We had shelf clouds! It was crazy.

Chrysalis watch: Day 4
Now that the Queen Butterfly chrysalis is a little darker, you can see little gold flecks along the base of the outer shell, as well as the rim!
They were always there, but now you can see them a lot better! It's beautiful. Caterpillar is well on its way to metamorphosis.❤️

Chrysalis watch: Day 3!
The chrysalis is slightly darker than the last couple of days, with the shimmering gold line at the base of the cap popping a little more.
It's also cold and rainy, which makes for a delightful contrast yet again on the mesquite behind it!
Go little caterpillar, go! ❤️

I took so many pictures, trying to capture the dew drops and coloring.
It's difficult because it's so tiny!
But I finally got it.
AND... If you zoom in, you can see the striped markings of initial caterpillar inside!

Caterpillar watch!

Caterpillar update!
I've been really sick, so I haven't been able to spend hours watching and filming this little guy.

Caterpillar update!
I've been really sick, so I haven't been able to spend hours watching and filming this little guy.
But I have kept close watch! After 3 days of wandering and resting, this guy finally hit the J shape. Surprisingly enough, on the milkweed!

Caterpillar watch, day 2.
I'm pretty sure it's on a hunt for a place to spin its little silk holder so it can safely pupate!
It found a spot last night. Stayed there all night and a few hours into this morning. But it was a tiny weed lead and not structurally sound. It's on the move again.
