My first was Duran Duran’s Rio on cassette, probably in early 1983. I rode my bike downtown to a repair shop that sold some tapes/45s. Gotta love growing up in a small town!

Passive Voice By Laura Da’ I use a trick to teach students how to avoid passive voice. Circle the verbs. Imagine inserting “by zombies” after each one. Have the words been claimed by the flesh-hungry undead? If so, passive voice. I wonder if these sixth graders will recollect, on summer vacation, as they stretch their legs on the way home from Yellowstone or Yosemite and the byway’s historical marker beckons them to the site of an Indian village— Where trouble was brewing. Where, after further hostilities, the army was directed to enter. Where the village was razed after the skirmish occurred. Where most were women and children. Riveted bramble of passive verbs etched in wood— stripped hands breaking up from the dry ground to pinch the meat of their young red tongues.

Ok, so this post sent me down a tiny rabbit hole that began with “wait, did Jon never have a nose?”, took a detour through “huh, is his middle name just a letter? And his brother is named what now?” and ended with “at least one wiki editor definitely does not find Jon endearing…
Personality Jon is often presented as being very odd and off-putting to others, particularly many of the women he would date or attempt to date before his relationship with Liz began. Jon's off-putting nature is the result of a wide number of factors, but common reasons for it include his ridiculous pick-up lines, his over-the-top and off-putting fashion sense, weird habits, and annoying character and personality. A recurring gag at a certain point in the comics was Jon and Garfield attending New Year's gatherings only for Garfield to wind up charming the other attendees while Jon would often be shunned and forced to return home. While lacking social skills, Jon is not socially introverted, rather it is because of how over-the-top and extroverted he is that often lands him in trouble with others. Garfield often mocks him for these blunders.
