Started yesterday, expect to be done this weekend. Vignettes of life in Paris as the author falls in love with her spouse to be. Very easy read and lots of lovely recipes…

Reading has been just the gift to myself and escape needed lately: this though, is a gift to the whole world. Incredible writing. Heartfelt, honest, and wrenching yet hopeful. America is exposed, raw, and on display but so is humanity. 10/10

Family (stuck where they can’t control food): I ate like crap this weekend. I want veggies and soup when we get home.

Me: I got you.
A hearty soup chock full of veggies: farm fresh carrots, onion, celery, acorn squash (try it - it makes for a lovely creaminess when they fall apart in the broth), zucchini, great northern beans and cabbage smothered in roasted tomatoes, fresh herbs (oregano, thyme, basil, parsley, rosemary, sage), garlic and homemade chicken stock.

Robert Longo, “The Acceleration of History” exhibit, Milwaukee Art Museum
A large glowing orb art piece, bathed in light, suspended from a large steel structure, hangs alone in an art museum. It is luminous and is even attractive, a depth of gold texture and copper hues. Close up to the glowing orb we see it is made up of bullets, the casings shafts of gold, the piercing tips copper hues. They are placed close together but at random, covering the entire surface. The museum description of the art piece reads: Death Star; The Year of 2018, 2022 44,000.308 FMJ 150 grain brass, copper, lead bullets; wire arc additive manufactured/milled aluminum; steel I-beams; steel chain Courtesy of the artist and Pace Gallery. At first glance, the golden sphere in this room may appear to be a glowing ball or planetary body. A closer inspection reveals the dark reality: the orb is studded with 40,000 AR-10 bullet casings and tips, the number of Americans who died from gun violence in 2018. Longo placed the bullets using an algorithm that removed any visual pattern to represent the chaos of these events. Death Star; The Year of 2018 updates Longo's 1993 work of the same name. That Death Star was half the diameter with fewer than half the bullets. The pursuit of making something beautiful out of something tragic is a venerable tradition in art history that Longo invokes with this sculpture. The haunting beauty of the work conveys a solemnity befitting a memorial to this nation's epidemic of gun violence.
